The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of James Donnelley can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Condolence: Our world has lost one of its best. Jim is a person we should all try to emulate through our own lives. He was always a gentleman who knew no bounds with his generosity, friendship, and overall gregarious approach to life. I had the pleasure of working with Jim as he chaired our board of directors for 16 years - the longest tenure in our 64 year history. He was an unwavering passionate leader, who always focused on the mission of helping others, and he became an inspiring mentor and a dear friend. His legacy will live on through the many individuals he showed how to live life - both professionally and personally - to the fullest. Words cannot express how much he will be missed by all those who were blessed to know him. Our deepest sympathies go out to all of his friends and family as we join together to celebrate his life well-lived. Go in peace Jim.

Condolence: I had the privilege of working for Jim Donnelley for many years and the honor of being his friend for even longer. He was the epitome of graciousness, intelligence, and generosity. His well-known greeting of “Hi Friend” was characteristic of both his kind and thoughtful nature and his remarkable ability to relate to and befriend people from all walks of life. The world is now a far lesser place without him and I will greatly miss his friendship and wise counsel. Jim Donnelley was a true gentleman who I was proud to call my friend.

Condolence: To Nina and the Donnelley Family,

Jim had a profound impact on the Sierra Pacific Resources Board of Directors during my tenure, as well as before, and even after his retirement. I will never forget the first time I met him in December 2002. He is instrumental in my decision to accept the offer to join the company. His insight, personality and humor always shown through even in the most difficult times. HIs steady hand and inquisitiveness always helped make appropriate decisions. I regret that I never got the opportunity to take him up on his gracious open invitation to visit him after he retired from the Board. He is in my thoughts often and while my wife, Renee, never met him, she knows him through the stories that I have told over the years. My sincere condolences to you all. He will live in my heart and mind always.

Condolence: On behalf of The Nature Conservancy, I am incredibly grateful for Jim's support and serving as a champion for our work in Chicago connecting youth to nature. This sudden news of his passing caused me to reflect on our initial meeting with him as trustee of the National Recreation Foundation. I can’t help but smile remembering his insightful questions, curiosity to learn more, his love for trains, and gentle urging for us to think of larger connections we could make with the libraries in the city. As part of the grant that was awarded this year because of that meeting and his support, this past Saturday, September 29th, we gathered with our partners and hosted a community planting at the Burnham Wildlife Corridor. We started the day in a circle acknowledging the Foundation and Jim for his generous spirit, followed by youth leaders leading the way to lovingly place over 2,500 native plants in the ground that will bring beauty and life to this city. This work of building community of people and place is powerful and stands as a living legacy and example of Jim's generosity. He will be missed.
